Students have been asked to interview someone they know that had/has immigrated to Canada. As a class we came up with possible interview questions. Tuesday, May 27 - Bring a Cultural Artifact
We are starting our unit on Immigration for Social Studies. Students have been asked to bring a cultural artifact that represents their culture. They will present their artifacts in small groups and respond to the following questions:
1) Pourquoi est-ce que cet objet est important pour toi et ta famille? (Why is this artifact important to you and your family?)
2) Comment est-ce que cet objet représente ta culture? (How does this artifact represent your culture?)

Students need to read their last assigned pages and complete their last role sheet. For the past 6 weeks, students have met every Wednesday and presented their role sheets to their groups. It will be important for students complete their whole package if not yet completed for this Wednesday.
Thursday, May 22 - Mont-Royal FIELD EVENTS (1:00 pm to 3:00 pm)
On Thursday from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, students participating in FIELD events including: High jump, Long jump, Triple jump and Shot put will be at Mont-Royal.

Tuesday, May 12 - Field trip to Playland
Wednesday, May 13 - Handsworth Track and Field (8:00 -12:00)
Our first track and field meet is at Handsworth on Wednesday, May 14 from 8:00 to 12:00. This meet is for all track events including sprints, distance (400m and 800m) and relays. Students participating need to be dropped off at Handsworth for 8 am. Students must make sure to sign in with a teacher and return their jersey before they sign out. Students can return with a parent to school or wait until 12:00 and walk back with a teacher.
Friday, May 16 - Funday at Cleveland
Our class will be participating in stations in the morning, walking to Eldon park during the mid part of the day and attending our Fun Day assembly in the afternoon. This year's theme is Fairy Tales!

Tuesday, May 6 - "Artist for kids" is coming to our classroom
On Tuesday, May 2, Artist for Kids is coming to our classroom in the morning. This 2 hour hands on workshops will offer students unique opportunities to explore a variety of materials and techniques. Students will be encouraged to express themselves visually and the lesson will be designed to stimulate each student¹s imagination and creativity.
The title of the workshop is: Homage to David Thompson - reworking historical maps in contemporary art
Students will engage in art and map making. The lesson is linked to the social studies curriculum, students will no only add to what they have learned about maps of Canada and British Columbiaso far, but how maps can be used to expand their knowledge in exploring personal imagery in art. Also, the important historical link is made to early BC explorer, David Thompson, and how maps were originally created.

Thursday, May 8 - Track and Field Mini Meet at Handsworth - 3:30 to 5:30 pm
Students will meet in the gym at 2:30 with their jerseys. They will leave school at 2:45 and walk to Handsworth. The mini-meet is for students participating in relays and 1500m. It is important that students return their jersey and sign-out with one of the teachers before they leave Handsworth.

Dear Parents and Guardians of Grades 4, 5 and 6 students,

Wednesday, April 23 - Our second Literature Circles

Wednesday, April 23 - Young Actors Program
This week we are starting our Young Actors program on Wednesday, April 23. It is important that students bring in their permission forms and payment ($11.00) this week.
Edible garden project
Some students took some some egg cartons in plastic containers home today. Each carton contains earth and seeds. It will be important that students keep them warm, exposed to sunlight and moist. I would like it if students could bring them back on Tuesday, April 22 - so that we can make some observations.

Spring Photos and Poetry
Students need to take a photo outside that represents spring time and send it to my emai: [email protected]. We will be using the photo for our Poetry unit.
Math Videos
This week we did a review on metric unit conversion and I started teaching about calculating the perimeter of different objects.
I have created a couple of videos inspired by some examples I gave in class. These math videos can be found in the "mathématiques" section of this website. It is advised that students watch these videos and practice. These videos were designed to help students remember key terms and equations as well as give parents an overview about what we are studying in class.

Field Trip to the Museum of Anthropology at UBC
We have been focusing on various Aboriginal cultures in BC and Canada as well as describing Aboriginal peoples' relationship with the land and natural resources. A visit to the museum of anthropology will help deepen students understanding of aboriginal culture and history.
On Wednesday, April 16 our classroom will be going to the Museum of anthropology at UBC and attending the Potlatch program.

Welcome Back from Spring Break!
I hope everyone had a fun and restful break.
Don't forget that this week in P.E. we are starting a yoga program. There are still several students who need to return their consent form with the cost of the program. I have extra consent forms for students that need them.

Flash Mob Poetry at Capilano Library - Friday, March 14
We would like to welcome any parents interested in watching or joining our flash mob poetry at Capilano library on Friday, March 14. Students will be reciting the poem: The canoe he called Loo Tass by Amanda Reid-Stevens. We will be leaving our classroom at 1:05 and heading down to the lower field. Our class will be paired up with their grade 2 buddy class. We will be walking to Capilano libray with 6 other classes. Any parents interested in helping out please join us in our classroom at 1:00 pm or meet us at Capilano Library at around 1:15 pm.

Mme McHugh, Mme Cork and Mme Gill have prepared an exciting group project that students will work on through out the week and that will touch upon Language Arts, French, Math, and Social Studies.
There won't be a spelling test or dictée this week. However, students need to complete their Math and Science packages for March 10. A reminder that there will be a science test on March 11. The science pre-quiz is in the Science package and I will be correcting it on Monday.
Since I will be away for the week and in the wilderness, I might not be able to receive or send off any emails. Sorry for this inconvenience.

Valentine's Day - Friday, February 14
On Friday there is an assembly on the virtue of LOVE. Our class is presenting photographs they have taken that symbolize love.
In the afternoon, our class can exchange valentines. Please remember that if students wish to give out valentines, they need to give them out to all of their classmates. Also, students can bring some treats to share with the whole class.

Cleveland will be turning down its thermostats to help reduce green house gas emissions and save money. We will have an ugly sweater contest within our classroom. Students are welcome to wear a warm or ugly sweater.

Students bring 2$ and wear pajamas to help fundraise money for cancer research.
Determination Assembly - Friday, January 31
Our class will be participating in the Determination Assembly. For the last 2 weeks, students have been researching a famous person and building a powerpoint presentation. The purpose of the project was to show how famous people have shown determination despite the obstacles they might have faced in their lives. Students need to practice their presentations at home.

Bring an empty roll of toilet paper - Wednesday, January 29
Students need to bring an empty roll of toilet before Wednesday, January 29. Rolls need to be pre-painted or coloured in red. We will be using these rolls to make dragons for the Chinese New Year with our buddy class.

Thursday, January 23 - Hand back field trip forms (Film Festival)
On Thursday, February 27 our classroom as well as other French immersion classrooms will be attending the French Film Festival. This trip will provide students with the opportunity to view a French film appropriate to their age and French level. Students need to hand back their field trip forms and 10$ by Thursday, January 23.

Our class will be participating in the Rocks and Rings curling program this Friday at 9:00 am in the large gym. Students must return signed consent forms along with $1 in order to participate in the workshop.

PJ Day, Secret Santa and Arts and Crafts - Friday, December 20
Friday is Pajama day and Secret Santa! Also, students need to bring a small ziplock bag with candies and other goodies in order to decorate their ginger bread houses. I will need some parent volunteers to help out between recess and lunch (10:45 am and 12:00 pm) with the ginger bread houses and other arts and crafts. Please email me if you are available. Social Studies quiz on Wednesday, December 17
Students will be tested on the seven physical regions of Canada. Below is a link to the "homework and assignment" section of my website where you will find the pre-quiz.
Math test - Friday, December 20
Students received a pre-test at the beginning of the week and will be working on it IN CLASS (not for homework). The test is on Measurements. It will include questions on telling time, exploring elapsed time, counting money and making change. However, students need to finish for homework their math packages from last week. Math packages are due on Thursday, December 19. I will be giving students time in class to finish their math work.
Secret Santa Gift exchange - Friday, December 20
We are having a secret Santa gift exchange on Friday, December 20. Students can be bring in their wrapped gifts through out the week in a plastic bag. Below is a letter that was sent home with more information on the exchange.

Winn Dixie Party - Friday, December 13, 2013
Our class has been reading Kate DiCamillo’s novel Because of Winn-Dixie and the students have worked hard on several projects related to the book. Some of the projects included a scrapbook of the characters in the book, a diorama of their favorite scene of the story, a Who Am I game, maps of the setting etc.
The last few chapters in Because of Winn-Dixie are a party at Gloria Dump’s home. We will be mirroring her party in our classroom on Friday, December 13.
We will be decorating the classroom, presenting our Winn-Dixie plays of Chapter 9 and 24, and playing some of the games the students have created.
I was hoping that some parents could provide a potluck style lunch for the students.
If you are able to prepare or bring something for the classroom, please email me and bring it first thing in the morning.
Here are some suggestions:
• egg, chicken, or chicken sandwiches (cut into triangles; crusts removed, frilly toothpicks in each)
• Punch (orange juice, grapefruit juice, and seltzer or club soda)

Grade 7 Christmas Craft Fair - December 4th - 2 to 4:30 pm
This year's fair will be held Wednesday afternoon December 4th from 2 to 4:30 pm in the large gym. The grade 7 elves have been working hard in their workshop to create a wonderful assortment of Crafts and goodies which will make a perfect gift for that special someone! There will be plenty of seasonal tunes and good cheer for everyone so mark your calendars, practice your caroling and plan on stopping by to sample the goodies and stuff your stockings!

Novel Study - Bridge to Terabithia

We will be going to the Britannia Mining Museum on Monday, November 25. We are meeting at school at 8:30 am and returning at 3:00 pm. Last day to hand in field trip forms and payments is next Thursday, November 21.
Novel Study - Bridge to Terabithia

Halloween Classroom Party - October 31 at 1:00pm
This Thursday, October 31 at 1:00 pm we will be having a Halloween party with games and a movie. Students are welcome to dress up for the afternoon (only) in a Halloween costume if they wish too. Home Reading Program
Students have just received their home reading passports (Mon passeport de la lecture). Students will record 20 nights of FRENCH reading. Each entry must be a minimum of 20 minutes a night. Please check the Home Reading section of this website for more details.
